As one of the largest military family housing communities on the East Coast, Fort Belvoir was in need of a neighborhood center to serve those who live on and around the Post. In response to that need, the Woodlawn Village Neighborhood Center was conceived as a hub for a wide range of activities including family gatherings, wedding parties, swimming, social events, fitness activities and neighborhood meetings. The Center’s grounds feature outdoor activity space including a large multi-purpose field, community gardens, dog park, playground, croquet lawn, picnic and grilling areas, as well as a fitness training circuit and nature walk.
With Frank Lloyd Wright’s Pope Leighey House and a nature reserve in close proximity, the design team wanted to create a contemporary building that would tie together the newly updated neighborhood with the preservation of natural habitats. This effort and focus on sustainability enabled the building to achieve LEED Gold Certification. Standing as a tribute to organic design, the interior and exterior spaces flow together in a manner that welcomes the individual through its relation to the human scale. The building is welcoming to both adults and children alike, providing a necessary comfortable backdrop to the ever changing lives of our military families.
